School Counsellors provide direct / indirect educational counselling services to students in the areas of personal, academic, social and career development.  They may work with individuals, small groups, classrooms or parents.  They work with classroom teachers to develop and implement preventative programs or to refer students to clinicians / community-based services.

The primary goal of School Counselling services is to enhance and promote student learning.  These services are designed to provide supports and resources to students at all grade levels, to their families and to educators.  They are intended to facilitate the educational, personal, social, emotional, and career development of students in schools and in the community. 

School Counsellors are members of the Student Services team.

The school counsellor’s role includes:

  • Counselling
  • Guidance Education
  • Assisting in the development of effective behavioural change.
  • School-based consultation, planning and coordination within and beyond the school setting in the best interest of students.

In addition to implementing the school counselling program, the School Counsellor will also manage the CTS program in both high schools.  Career and Technology Studies is a structural framework for assembling learning opportunities from both school and community resulting in highly individualized flexible programming.  Optional courses from Technology Education (Building Systems, Home Economics, and Business / Computer Studies, Electronics) are combined with community-based “Career Internship” and Career Development at the high school level.

DIVISION - .50 – Term Teacher Position for the 2013-2014 school year

Early Years Guidance – Social Skills Program Teacher and School Counsellor

This position is a combination of a .25 FTE Early Years Guidance – Social Skills Program Teacher and a .25 FTE School Counsellor.

Early Years Guidance:  The primary goal of Early Years Guidance – Social Skills Program is a Prevention Education strategy to assist students in developing and enhancing their social skills as they apply them during everyday interaction with others and as a self-management strategy.

The successful candidate will work with Principals and teaching staff of a minimum 8 schools receiving Early Years Guidance – Social Skills Programming, to schedule a monthly-classroom-based social skills program.

School Counsellor:  The school counseling position will be servicing Crystal City Early Years, Holland School and Ste. Marie School in Prairie Spirit School Division.

Qualifications:

  • Certified teacher
  • Experience in early years education
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills
  • Knowledge of social skills resource appropriate to early and middle years students
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills
  • Must be willing to travel to schools within the division for program delivery
  • Experience working in school counseling
  • Able to coordinate school counseling services for elementary students as part of a collaborative team.

TRANSPORTATION/MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT - JOB DESCRIPTION

Immediate Supervisor: The Director of Transportation & Maintenance

Position Summary

To assist the Director of Transportation and Maintenance with various aspects of the Operations sector and provide field and clerical support to the success of the department.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  1. Must be self-motivated and able to work in both independent and team environments as required;
  2. Must be physically capable of fulfilling the responsibilities and duties, willing to undergo or upgrade training as required and have acceptable tolerances to heat and cold, heights and confined spaces. A base line physical may be requested.
  3. Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 drivers licence as a minimum.
  4. Demonstrated ability with technology, use of computers and office software, typically Word, Excel, Access, Adobe, Electronic Mail and Internet Explorer as well as capacity to learn new operating systems and software.
  5. Must be able to take direction and assignments from the Director of Transportation and Maintenance;
  6. Relevant post-secondary education or experience and credentials in one of the main function areas of Transportation, Maintenance and Safety;
  7. Must be willing to participate and assist in training programs in the areas of Transportation, Maintenance and Safety as required.
  8. Able to relay information accurately orally and written through email, letter and telephone as well as other forms of communication.
  9. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

Transportation

  1. Perform the function of Driver Instructor for recruit drivers to obtain Class 2 drivers licences in accordance with the standards of the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation and all regulatory authorities.
  2. Perform the function of Driver Instructor for recruit drivers to obtain certification with the Pupil Transportation Unit of The Manitoba Department of Education as School Bus Driver.
  3. Assist with driver evaluation and in-service programs as required.
  4. Assist with co-ordinating student data, hours of service, fleet maintenance, orders and supplies/shipping, route lists and maps, driver data and filing and reporting as required.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

 

Maintenance

  1. Assist with in-the-field gathering of photos, measurements and descriptions of facilities and projects as support for the Five Year Capital Plan of the division.
  2. Assist in the execution of projects and coordination of site meetings, tailgate meetings and project oversight. Provide status reports of capital project progress.
  3. Assist with the monitoring of the Asbestos Survey program of the division with routine inspection, testing, photography and documentation of facilities. Provide input into the Operations and Maintenance plan for Asbestos control in facilities.
  4. Assist with the monitoring of the Roof Maintenance, Fire Prevention, Water Disinfection, Custodial and Playground Inspection programs through the provision of reports, photographs and reports of conditions.
  5. Assist in Maintenance and Custodial in-service and training programs as required.
  6. Provide information to support the maintenance schedules, replacement and loss prevention programs of the division for equipment, boilers, AHU’s and HVAC systems to minimize breakdowns.
  7. Provide input into the Safety programs of the division by observing practices and conditions, deficiencies and concerns.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Safety

  1. Perform duties as Safety Resource Officer to the division, establishing and maintaining Safe Work Procedures as required by Workplace Safety and Health regulations.
  2. Perform Facility Audits and Inspections to identify safety hazards and equipment condition. Assist to develop plans and/or processes to eliminate/reduce hazards.
  3. Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the Chemical Waste Disposal program of the division for all hazardous wastes.
  4. Provide yearly training to all division staff in WHMIS as required. Assist in the provision of other staff training programs as required (CPR, First Aid, A.E.D. etc.)
  5. Provide input into the Safety programs of the division by observing practices and conditions, deficiencies and concerns.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

 

General and Clerical

  1. Ability to organize and prioritize high volumes of work in multiple departments and demands under frequent interruptions and tight timelines.
  2. Ability to maintain documentation and filing of the various department operations as required. Entries and summarization of various programs, initiatives, reports and projects, use of Excel, Word, Access, Internet explorer, Adobe, email,  some interpretation of blueprints and specifications.
  3. Ability to maintain the confidentiality standards of the division.

Ability to work effectively with many teams and departments internally to the division and externally with tact and consideration.

Child Abuse Registry Checks are performed by the Province of Manitoba, Child Abuse Registry Unit. Instructions for obtaining a Child Abuse Registry Self-Check are available on-line or download the document by clicking here. You may also provide Prairie Spirit School Division with the authorization to conduct this check on your behalf. The required form can be abtained from the Division Office. If you elect this option, the results remain the property of Prairie Spirit School Division and we will not be able to provide copies.

How to Obtain a Criminal Record Check
Please visit your local police service or RCMP detachment. You will be required to complete the necessary forms, provide photo identification for verification, and submit the applicable processing fee. Please note that you will be employed in a “position of trust” (i.e., a position that requires an individual to work with children, seniors or challenged persons) and, as such, you must inform the police service of this and authorize them to conduct a Vulnerable Sector Search as part of the Criminal Record Check.
